About the Neighborhood Council

What Is It?

The redevelopment that will transform our neighborhood is just beginning. Residents, business people, and city officials have been working together to plan a Neighborhood Council to influence this transformation.

USNC board member David Scott has created two short videos that outline the mission, values, vision and goals of our organization.

This presentation provides an overview of the activities of the working group that brought the Neighborhood Council into being and the decisons made by its members.

Our goals include building community, empowering members of the community, minimizing displacement, promoting affordability, increasing economic opportunity, and stewarding the public realm and the built environment. Furthermore, the Union Square Neighborhood Council aspires to be representative of the demographics of the community in Union Square. Our ideal board comprises at least 50% women and at least 27% people of color, reflecting the make-up of our neighborhood. We recognize these goals are aspirational, but we do ask that all board members be committed to this inclusive principle and do their best to think creatively about how to realize it within the operation, efforts and initiatives of the USNC.

Our vision for Union Square is a thriving, engaged, enjoyable, inclusive, sustainable, diverse urban neighborhood and vibrant commercial center.

Our mission is to shape the future of Union Square as an increasingly inclusive and vibrant neighborhood and commercial center built around the aspirations of the people who live and work here.

Our values are interdependence, inclusion, wellness, participation, equity, enjoyment, stewardship, transparency and civic engagement.
